Gray Matter

Hello All!

I was asked to make a silver and gold cake in a week.  I haven't used these two colors a whole lot before.  You cannot make silver buttercream, but you can use luster dust to make it silver.  I thought I better practice!  The gold should be easier since I will use fondant for those accents.

I like to make parchment bags.  They work great for small batches and are inexpensive.  Plus, clean up is a snap!  Just take the tip out and throw away, no washing the bag.  Gotta love that!

I made a small batch of gray frosting.  It was a little dark, but was just for practice :)

I like to use a glass to hold the bag upright while filling any of my bags.

I used Wilton's silver dust.

Mix it with a little vodka.  You also can use clear vanilla if you prefer.

I piped a little on wax paper, can always use the practice at writing :)  I can have good handwriting when I try, but piping is a whole other story.

I brushed the dust on after.  Couldn't really capture it with the camera, but you get the gist.  You can see the sparkles.  Plus, when I make the cake I will use a lighter gray which will look nice against a white cake.

Hope you all have a great rest of the week!

CLEAR!

Hello All!

My older sister is a nurse at the local hospital here in town.  I give her praise!  Not everyone can do what a nurse or doctor can do.  It takes a special person to be able to handle everything they see.  We have also dealt with some of her staff when our family has been on her floor.  They are all so warm and friendly.  This weekend was her long weekend to work.  Basically, she eats, sleeps and works all weekend long.  No time for anything else.  I decided to make cookies to help her weekend go a little faster.

I didn't have a t-shirt cutter, so I used a baby cutter and cut off the bottoms.

I flooded all the cookies and let them sit for a bit.

They just recently changed policy and now everyone on her floor is to wear blue scrubs.

I made some hearts

and don't forget the smiling patients they take care of :)

Paul made me a light box for my photos :)  super excited about that!  I am still using a point and shoot camera, but at least this will cut down on some of the harsh lighting.

I brought the tray to her work.  She said everyone loved the cookies!  Mission Accomplished :)

Hope you all have a great holiday week!

Oreo!

Hello All!

I have been following Sweet Temptations on facebook for a while now.  http://www.sweettemptations.me/  Just LOVE her work!  I bought a mold and decided to give the oreos a try :)

I bought white chocolate from my local cake store, Lynn's Cake and Candy.  I find it melts better in the double boiler.

Melted great :)

It is pretty easy and simple.  I just put a little chocolate on bottom, then the cookie and then a little more chocolate on top.  Tap out the bubbles, and you are done!

I put sprinkles on to jazz it up a bit.

I would like to invest in some transfer sheets and see how those work with the oreos.  They have all kinds of great designs.

Hope you all have a great rest of the week!

Minty Good Time

Hello All!

We have a local cupcake shop called Cupcake.  My girlfriend and I went there this past weekend.  They are also a cafe, selling food and beer/wine.  We got a few items and split them.  Was overall satisfied with the cupcakes.

A few of the departments at my work have been ordering from the same shop lately.  They will get 2 dozen of a variety of kinds.  It makes me mad!  I am not sure if it is because I know how much the company is paying for cupcakes and delivery charge, or if it is because I am not in one of said departments and don't get to enjoy a cupcake :)  So, I told some girls in my department that it is out time for cupcakes!  I found a recipe from http://www.annies-eats.com/2011/10/07/mint-chocolate-cupcakes/

I made a chocolate cupcake

Then started making the ganache.  It is pretty simple, just heated whipping cream and poured over chocolate.

I mixed in some Creme De Menthe as well.

I made a whipped mint frosting

I wanted to drizzle ganache on top, so i used my squeeze bottle which worked out great!

It turned out fabulous!

Oh how tasty...

It's a.....

Hello All!

I had my first gender reveal cake this weekend.  The doctor put the gender in an envelope and then it was given to me.  Super exciting!  The couple was having a party with the family and wanted to find out at the same time.  It was a super fun cake to make :)

I made a vanilla cake so I could tint the batter.  I was so nervous that I was going to forget to color the batter, I had post it notes spread out all over :)  I put buttercream in the middle.

I did a neutral on the outside. I wanted to do the green all over so there would be no peaking.

I wish them the best of luck and am so happy I could be a part of their special day.

Hope you have a great week.

Baptism

Hello All!

I had a request for a baptism cake this weekend.  She wanted a yellow cake with chocolate filling with a buttercream frosting.  I have a rich chocolate frosting that I love to use.
I made the cake one night after work.  By the time I went to stack the cakes, it was getting late.  I kept debating if I wanted to make a frosting dam or not.  When I was about to put the chocolate on, I decided it would be better to be safe than sorry.  I had my mixer bowl filled with chocolate already and didn't want to transfer and wash the bowl.  So, I used my hand mixer for the buttercream.  Boy, have I been spoiled these past two months!  I really missed my KitchenAid making the frosting.

I made the cross from candy melts.

Hope you all have a great rest of the day!
